Bicycle Ride Preparation
Don’t underestimate the importance of bicycle ride preparation. It’s important to check your bike before each ride to be sure that it’s safe. Spin the wheels and give the brakes a squeeze to be sure they stop the wheel. Air up your tires to the proper pressure listed on your tire’s sidewall. Check that all quick release levers are closed properly, that the chain is lubricated, and that all bolts are tight. Make sure your seatbag is loaded with everything you’ll need to change a flat. Finally– get out there and have a great ride!
It’s also a good idea to be familiar with your cycling route before starting your ride. If you’re riding in new territory, have a cue sheet (a map) that gives you directions so you can stay on course. Pack your cell phone, just in case. We carry a number of GPS enabled computers to help you stay on your route too! And, if you’re riding alone, remember to let someone know where you’re headed and when to expect you back.
There is a great app called Bike Repair, which allows you to get some tips on emergency bike repairs while you’re on the road. It has information on changing a flat, adjusting derailleurs, truing wheels and more. Definitely an on the road or trail companion.
