Rear Mount Bike Racks
Rear mount bike racks are the ones that attach to the back of cars with straps and hooks. These are meant for a shorter distance, infrequent travel. It’s best not to open the trunk/hatch when these racks are installed, so they should come on and off the car between uses. This style of rack requires secure attachment points to attach the hooks to. Typically, there are 2 straps on the top of the trunk lid, 2 on the sides and 2 on the bottom.
Rear bike racks don’t fit every car, but they do fit many of them. To see if your car is an approved fit for this style of rack, you can check the rack manufacturer’s website. If your car does not accept a rear rack, there are always hitch and roof car rack options.
Hitch Car Racks
Hitch racks plug into receiver hitches on any type of car that has a hitch installed. Even if your car did not come with a hitch from the manufacturer, they are easily installed. Once you have a hitch, you’ll be able to choose from a myriad of bike racks for 2, 3, 4, or even 5 bikes! There are hang-style racks that hold the bike by the top tube and platform style racks that support the wheels of the bike and don’t touch the frame at all.
There are lighter car racks for 2-3 bikes, heavy-duty racks to carry electric bikes, and everything in between. One of the long term benefits to buying a hitch-mounted rack is that as long as you have a hitch on future cars, you’ll never need to buy another car rack! Just keep moving the hitch rack from car to car.
If you’re carrying an electric bike, you’ll want to specify that so we can assist you with finding a rack that can support the additional weight.
Roof Bike Racks
Roof bike racks make the most sense when you want to carry items for different sports (bikes, kayaks, canoes, skis, etc) and/or cargo boxes for storage. Roof bike racks will be the priciest option, but also the most versatile. We’ll help you sort through the options to find the correct parts to fit your car, as they are specific to the vehicle.
Seasucker car racks work on cars that are typically hard to fit with rear, hitch, or roof options. These racks use industrial-strength suction cups to secure the bike to the car. They have been tested and used for years, and they work incredibly well. You can hold 1, 2, or even 3 bikes on most cars.
