Does Cycling Clothing Really Make a Difference?
In one word, yes. It's design to move with you as you ride. So it makes your ride infinitely more comfortable. Here are some reasons why.
Fit. Cycling gear fits your body appropriately when you're leaning forward over the handlebars. For example, shirts and jackets have a longer back to cover your lower back. Plus, legwear has a higher waist.
Movement. Cycling gear moves with you as you ride. That's why cycling shorts use Lycra fabric. In addition, it has built-in stretch to avoid bunching up and chafing.
Sweat-handling. If you've ridden a bike in hot weather wearing a cotton t-shirt, you know what happens. Your shirt gets soaked. Cycling gear wicks moisture away from your body. At the same time, it helps repel water coming from outside your body like rain.
Padding. The padding in cycling shorts provides an extra layer of shock absorption. Some shorts use even more than one layer. Along with your saddle, that padding reduces road shock. It also adds a layer of soft fabric against your skin to prevent chafing on long rides.

Some Must-Have Bike Clothing
As mentioned, there's no shortage of options when it comes to cycling clothing. At the very least, you should have these items on hand.
Bike Jerseys
Material type is essential with a bike jersey. Form-fitting materials, like Lycra® spandex, reduce drag when you ride while always wicking away sweat to keep you drier. Typically offered in tighter and looser cuts, you can choose the fit that makes you feel most comfortable.
Bike Shorts
Bike shorts have added stretch to give you complete freedom of movement while riding. Their padded crotch liner reduces friction, wicks moisture, and generally makes riding more comfortable. Bike shorts use a panel construction with a padded liner that gets pretty complex and comes in various shapes, thicknesses, and materials. These vary among brands and even across genders.
Bike shorts are cut longer than regular shorts and have leg grippers to keep them in place and avoid chafing. In addition, you can look into mountain bike shorts (baggies), bib shorts, and even skorts for women. During colder months, capris, tights, and leg warmers are available.
Cycling Jackets
Cycling jackets come in different weights for all types of riding temperature ranges. A lightweight and foldable windbreaker jacket is always necessary for any cyclist’s wardrobe. As it gets colder, you’ll need to move into a thicker jacket offering insulation and windproofing to keep your core warm.
